The Centre will host a millet food festival and lunch at the Parliament on Tuesday to celebrate the International Year of Millets, 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to attend the event.  The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023 the International Year of Millets. Spearheaded by PM Modi, the Government of India sponsored the proposal for International Year of Millets 2023, which was accepted by the UNGA. On Tuesday, MPs from all parties will sit down to taste variety of cuisine prepared from indigenous millets, such as ragi (finger millet), jowar (sorghum) and bajra (pearl millets). “Chefs will prepare a variety of healthy meals and dishes made from Indian millets. Meals have always been an important part of military life — for sustainment as well as enjoyment. On holidays, the Defense Department has tried to provide especially delicious meals, as troops were often far from family and needed an extra morale boost. In 1933, the Christmas Day menu for Coast Guardsmen aboard the U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat Daphne on Staten Island, New York, included roast duck, giblet and oyster dressing, asparagus on toast and petit pois, or small green peas, as well as cigars and cigarettes. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jeffrey Manninen, a food advisor at Fort Lee, Virginia, said cigars and cigarettes were on chef-prepared menus until as late as 1959, possibly later. Cigarettes were even included in C rations as late as the early 1980s. Virgin Atlantic has unveiled details of its inflight Christmas menu, available on selected flights from December 24-26. Passengers in every cabin will be able to enjoy seasonal dishes such as roast turkey with festive trimmings, or a mushroom and butternut squash wellington. Festive desserts will include a milk chocolate and caramel mousse in economy, chocolate and caramel crunch in premium economy, and a millionaire’s chocolate log followed by a cheese platter in Upper Class. All passengers will also receive a Lindt chocolate reindeer during their travels.
