Interior Chinatown: The novel taking on Hollywood’s Asian tropes - BBC News

Image
Getty Images Willis Wu is not a Kung Fu Guy. Instead, much to his dismay, the struggling Asian American actor is only ever cast in parts like Generic Asian Man Number One or Background Oriental Male. He is, however, the main protagonist of the satirical novel Interior Chinatown, which last month won one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the US, the National Book Award for fiction. Its author, Charles Yu, says he wrote the book to "create a space where background characters get to have a story". Even more than that, he hopes the novel will shed more light on the ongoing debate about representation and Asian American stereotypes, and create a conversation about escaping the roles we are forced into. In the words of Willis Wu: "To be yellow in America... a special guest star, forever the guest." Not all black and white A former lawyer, Yu first shot to fame in 2010 with his novel How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional...

Hong Kong actress Carman Lee has met many actors and actresses throughout her career but one of those she remembers most fondly is former actress Joey Wong. Lee, 54, who is famous for playing Little Dragon Girl in a 1995 TVB adaptation of The Return Of The Condor Heroes, shared her memories of Wong recently as she promoted her newly launched memoir, titled Velvet Delphinium. Last Saturday (Dec 5), she posted two photos she took with Wong in 1989 as she plugged her book on Weibo. Lee wrote in Chinese: "I added two photos with Joey Wong specially in the new book, because she was the first actress I met in my life. "I was still a flight attendant in 1989, and filmed my first-ever show that year. I had the chance to film Killer's Romance together with Simon Yam and Wong." Clips of Demon Slayer movie have been leaked online by a culprit in Singapore, film distributor says - AsiaOne

Image
For many anime lovers in Singapore, the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train (that’s a lot of colons) screening in cinemas here has been a bright spot in a distressing year. The flick — which continues the story of last year’s highly popular anime series — had its big premiere in Singapore back in November, thanks to movie distributors Odex Pte Ltd. It’s a beloved enough franchise for ODEX to hold early screenings for fans, with tickets that went for as high as $54 . And people bought them too because, for that price, they also got to bring home Demon Slayer swag like t-shirts and posters. As much as the movie turned out to be a success on our shores, some bad seeds appeared to have tarnished the reputation of Demon Slayer fans here. According to Odex, clips from the anticipated movie have emerged on social media, seemingly recorded and leaked online from attendees in Singapore. “We have found and deleted two cinema leaks that originate from Singapore,” noted Od...

NEX cinema ventilation duct collapse due to accumulated water, overloaded brackets: BCA - CNA

Image
SINGAPORE: The collapse of a ventilation duct at Shaw Theatres in NEX shopping mall was caused by overloaded brackets due to the weight of accumulated water, authorities said on Monday (Dec 7). Two people were injured when the duct collapsed during a movie screening on Aug 30. Footage of the incident showed the duct had fallen across several rows of seats.  Advertisement Advertisement The cinema was temporarily closed as a safety precaution. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said a “significant amount of water” had accumulated in the layers of acoustic material surrounding the air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation duct. This was caused by “unforeseen excessive condensation”, it said. The weight of the water eventually overloaded the brackets supporting the air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation duct, causing them to give way. After the incident, BCA said it instructed NEX to appoint a professional engineer to carry out an investigation...
